Pattern of intrauterine growth retardation among low birth weight neonates

Background: There is an association between intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) and subsequent development of diabetes mellitus, coronary artery disease hypertension during adult life. With this context, it vital to give attention about the patterns body proportion IUGR babies. The aim study was determine asymmetric distribution in contrast symmetric among babies with low birth weight (LBW).
 Methods: This cross-sectional conducted Department Pediatrics, Sher-e-Bangla Medical College, Barisal,from January 2012 June 2012, a total 114 LBW. All singleton newborns, within 24 hours birth, having < 2.5 kg were included. Weight plotted for gestation age centile chart. Then Ponderal index (PI) calculated by using formula. Convenient sampling used. Data analyzed SPSS. P value <0.05 considered as significant.
 Results: Out LBW babies, 79 Among 45.6% male 54.4% female. mean mothers 24.2 ± 5.6 years. Most group 16 25 In study, most (68.4%) majority from rural areas. PI significantly (p =<0.001) lower than IUGR.
 Conclusion: highlights that, them IUGR, large population patterns. patients carries immense importance keep eye on risk fetal origin diseases.
